Director’s Background

My childhood was filled with challenges, including witnessing and experiencing physical abuse. Despite these early hardships, I always aspired to create a better life and break away from the cycle I was born into. The impact of these experiences shaped me, later leading to struggles with anxiety and depression. At around age 9, after my mother divorced an abusive stepfather, we moved to Tokomaru. My fondest memories were made in Ruatoria, where my family roots are, and I learned the values of hard work and community, even as I witnessed the challenges associated with the prevalent drinking culture.

During my time at high school, Palmerston North Boys’ High, I wasn’t particularly academic but received good grades for my positive attitude. Around age 15, I began to experience depression, isolating myself without understanding what was happening. A few years after high school, I was encouraged by Billy Meehan to start my studies at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, where I completed a Certificate in Applied Sports Studies in 2007. From there, I received a scholarship to study at International Pacific College, eventually earning a Diploma in International Sports Studies in 2008. With my wife’s support and inspiration, I pursued further education at UCOL, completing a bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science in 2012. This journey ignited my passion for clinical work and a desire to make a difference.

In 2013, I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Exercise Physiology, working with patients facing chronic diseases and mental health challenges. The rewards of helping people improve their quality of life were immeasurable—like the patient who proudly told me he could once again bend over to tie his shoes without struggling and returning to play golf.

Between 2014 and 2023, I served in the respiratory services department at Palmerston North Hospital. During this time, I continued my studies, achieving a Postgraduate qualification in Medical Science.

I contributed to significant projects, including helping the team become an accredited lab through the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand. The pandemic brought new challenges, and I had the opportunity to lead a team in the Emergency Department for COVID-19 screening. This experience taught me a lot about resilience and leadership, and I gained valuable skills in team coordination and patient care, especially during my time supporting the renal unit.

In early 2023, I began contracting with the Ministry of Education, offering mentoring services within schools to support Tamariki and their whānau. Driven by a strong commitment to community wellbeing, I strive to deliver holistic services that support schools and families alike. I launched the Box-Fit and Wellness Program later that year, addressing the needs of Tamariki, Rangatahi, and adults in our community. The program has gained significant support, and I have partnered with the Sports Manawatu, police and Oranga Tamariki to provide a safe space for developing coping strategies and emotional regulation skills.

My experiences have shaped my approach to business and community service. Currently, I am also contracted with Primary Health, where I provide respiratory testing services to referred clients in the Horowhenua district and Ōtaki. Through every role and partnership, I remain dedicated to supporting my community’s wellbeing and creating spaces for growth, connection, and empowerment.
